Bhavan’s Institutes at Allahabad and Kaushambi are the great gift of Late Shri Giridhari Lal ji Mehta who was not only a businessman and industrialist but a man of multi facet personality. His devotion for the uplift of Science, Technology, Art and Culture as well as very much interest in Medical Science inspired him to start a Hospital, a Post Graduate College of Science & Arts, a residential Public School at Bharwari. He also contributed large donations to Mehta Eye Hospital & an Auditorium in Prayag Sangeet Samiti at Allahabad. He started his business from Bharwari town and opened an office at Allahabad and then became one of the riches of the country having many Jute mills in Calcutta. He was very much interested to open group of multi-faculties educational institutions beginning from L.K.G. to P.G. College leading to University at Bharwari. On the inspiration of Dr. K.M.Munshi a Science College was established at Bharwari for the uplift of Science in the Backward Rural Area. Bharwari was the most backward rural area in education since first parliament election. To develop this backward rural area in to a developed educational and industrial area was the main purpose of Shri Giridhari Lal ji Mehta. With this purpose he was very keen to establish a well known education center in the backward rural area of Bharwari. Earlier the area of Bharwari was in the Allahabad district but now it is under the district Kaushambi with the district head quarter at Manjhanpur which is 12 km away from this education centre. Shri Giridhari Lal Ji Mehta established the Hospital named Mehta Hospital (within 20 acres land) in 1965 which was inaugurated by Shri C.B.Gupta, then Health Minister of U.P.
In 1968 established well furnished Science post graduate college in the name Vallabharam Saligram Mehta College of Science presently known as Bhavan’s Mehta Mahavidyalaya affiliated to C.S.J.M University, Kanpur, U.P. with the Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and Mathematics subjects.
At first preference was given in the field of Science but later on arts faculty was also added with Sanskrit, History, Sociology, Economics, Hindi, English subjects for helping the students of the backward rural area, so that they may get proper education near by of their area. Personalities like Justice P.N. Bhagawati, the well known Jurist and the Chief Justice of India, Shri Jaisukhlal Hathi, Cabinet Minister of India Govt., Dr. K.M. Munshi and his wife Smt. Lilavati Munshi, Dr. V.S.Jha, Ex. Vice Chancellor, Banaras Hindu Universtiy and other dignitaries of India were very much associated with this great institution of U.P. It is the privilege of Intuition that then Deputy Prime Minister of India Govt. and later on Prime Minister of India – Shri Morarji Bhai Desai inaugurated this institution in July, 1968.
An International Conference in Mathematics was held in 1976 under the Mehta Research Institute Bharwari. Prof. P. L. Bhatnagar was the first Director of MRI. This Institute was later on transferred to Jhunsi, Allahabad and it is known at present as Harishchandra Research Institute. This renowned Harishchandra Research Institute (HRI) was earlier proposed to be established in the name of Mehta Research Institute (MRI) in Bhavan’s Mehta Campus, Bharwari by the efforts of Late Shri Giridhari Lal Ji Mehta.
